Vintage Love with Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha

Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, the stars of the movie, “Sylvie’s Love.” The two portray Sylvie and Robert – an aspiring producer and successful saxophonist in the 1960’s whose deep love never seems to be perfectly timed. The beautiful and sensual homage to Hollywood’s golden era by writer-director Eugene Ashe.

“Even Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. still had a bunch of babies and fell in love,” Ashe says, explaining why he decided to focus on capturing life-changing love in his period drama. “It’s really important to show that we existed in the past [beyond] the ‘struggle culture’—that Black folks were still falling in love. I think not showing that is a way of erasing us.” -Eugene Ashe tells ESSENCE

We need those kinds of narratives for us. It was such a beautiful film visually and romantically. To see love through the different stages in Sylvie and Robert's life was extraordinary. They were soulmates and not even time could keep them apart. Most people don't experience that kind of love in a lifetime. They truly shine in this jazzy 1960's romance and it's beautiful to see black love on the screen authentically. The fashion and tailoring of the suits had me swooning. A wonderful breath of fresh air to see today. You can stream it now on Amazon Prime Video.
